SAMPRADAYA Dance Academy

SAMPRADAYA Dance Academy is at the forefront of training in bharatanatyam, a classical South Asian dance form and was established by leading Canadian South Asian dancer, choreographer and teacher Lata Pada in 1980 in Sudbury, Ontario and later established in Mississauga, Ontario in 1990. 

Founded with the vision of engaging future generations of Canadians in the rich classical dance form of bharatanatyam, the Academy is deeply committed to time-tested traditions of teaching, practice and performance. The Academy is committed to excellence in the teaching, practice and performance of the Tanjavur style of bharatanatyam.

Through SAMPRADAYA Dance Academy, founder/director Lata Pada strives to nurture a passion for dance by inspiring excellence, self-confidence and creativity in an emerging generation of dancers. Ms. Pada aims to contribute to the arts by creating dancers who embody the diversity and vibrancy of dance in Canada.

Currently, the Academy has an enrolment of 150 students, with all levels of training in theory and technique. The Academy offers four programs:

  • General Program: teaches dance as recreational activity.
  • Professional Training Program: trains dancers wishing to pursue a career in dance.
  • Summer Intensive Program: provides daily intensive classes to senior students and accepts students from across Canada.  Its objective is assist students achieve Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) Certification in a fun and supportive environment.
  • Arangetram Program: prepares students for their debut solo performance.

Through its dedication to excellence in bharatanatyam, SAMPRADAYA Dance Academy is at the forefront of training a new generation of dancers.

The Academy also maintains a resource library and documentation centre with a large collection of books, audio and video tapes of South Asian visual art, music and dance.

SAMPRADAYA Dance Academy operates independently from SAMPRADAYA Dance Creations; however it maintains a synergistic relationship through its Professional Training Program and the Company’s professional development initiatives, thus ensuring the artistic longevity of the Company.

The Academy’s primary objective is to guide our students’ personal growth, enabling them to progress in technique, artistry and creativity.
